Celebrate Get Caught Reading Month in the month of May by reading powerful feminists books, or books by women for women.
With multiple media outlets labeling the year of 2019 being The Year of Women, what better way to celebrate women all year long than by getting inspired by other though provoking women?! These books are meant to inspire, uplift, relate to, laugh and cry with, and overall, celebrate the empowerment that women bring to themselves and to others:
More Than Enough: Claiming Space for Who You Are (No Matter What They Say): Elaine Welteroth
When the second African American who was Teen Vogue’s editor-in-chief writes a memoir about her beautiful journey through journalism, fashion, and breaking boundaries, you know people are going to be excited about it. Elaine grew up in a small town in California as a biracial child who grew up being the only Black person in the room. This book empowers women through their own fights and battles they have in the workplace, in school, and in their everyday lives. The editor-turned-public-speaker wants to end the stigma of women “not feeling that they aren’t enough”, and wants everyone woman to know their worth.
Next Level Basic: The Definitive Basic Bitch Handbook: Stassi Schroeder
Reality star and fan favorite from the reality show, Vanderpump Rules, Stassi Schroeder rallies basic women together to say, “Me too!”. This book isn’t to say it is a bad thing to be known as “basic” in today’s society, but to embrace the women who enjoy pumpkin spice lattes, cocktails, #OOTD (outfit of the day), and romantic comedies. Stassi allows women to celebrate themselves, no matter how dramatic they THINK they are, who have doubts and fears, and who are scared to be their best self.
The Confidence Code: Katty Kay and Claire Shipman
Figure out the science behind why women feel less confident among themselves, and why they second guess their worth and place in this world. A book by a BBC journalist and an ABC national correspondent, these women made it their mission to help women feel empowered. One thing that the authors state in the book is, “There is a quality that sets some people apart. It is hard to define but easy to recognize. With it, you can take on the world; without it, you live stuck at the starting block of your potential.” The journalists talk about some of the pioneers of the women’s’ movement like Susan B. Anthony and Malala Yousafzai who are inspiring women with strength and courage. The authors encourage the women who read their book to be confident as they walk on the path that is set for them.
Feel Free: Zadie Smith
One of the most beloved and thought provoking authors of our time, U.K. based author Zadie Smith talks about women’s part in politics and hip hop in today’s society. She dives deep into how social media is affecting the environment, and how women are judged in pop culture. She allows her audience to laugh at the horrors of the political debate that is affecting the everyday woman, and how women can stand and be strong despite the battle they are up against.
